Rebel Gray SocketeerThe Rebel Gray Socketeer is an in-home business making period-style socks for Civil War reenactors (or just for those who want a nice pair of hand-knitted socks).
The yarn used to make our socks is 100% wool, of a worsted weight. There appears to be no documentation of period socks beng made with a worsted yarn (a heavier, clunkier yarn), so while the yarn might be not completely historically accurate, the pattern itself is. There are two distinquishing features to these socks. One is a 'seam-stitch' down the back between the cuff and the heel. While not really a seam, it is an accurate rendering of certain period socks. The other is what is called a 'double-thick' heel. Likewise, this does not take two strands of yarn, but the manner in which it is constructed gives it a tighter, tougher weave. |
FittingEach pair of socks is slightly different. For that matter, each individual sock will vary. That is just the nature of hand-knitted articles. Rather than shoe-sizes, the socks are listed in inches. For example, a pair may be listed as being 10" long. This refers to the length of the foot and does not include the ankle and cuff. It is suggested that you get a pair that is listed as a quarter inch longer than your foot measurement; that way your toes will not feel cramped.
On average the diameter of the cuff (stretched out) is about 4 1/2 inches across. From the top of the cuff to the heel, the length averages around 7 inches. If your leg [seven inches above ankle] is more than 13 1/2 inches in circumferance, these socks may not fit you well. |
PricingThe pricing may fluctuate with the size and design of the socks. On average though, the price is about $20.
